The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government will introduce the Marriage Equality Bill into the Legislative Assembly before the end of the year to legalize same-sex marriage in Canberra.

The Australian Greens are supporting the Labor minority government of the ACT on the move, Xinhua reports.

The ACT will move on to become the first Australian jurisdiction to legalize same sex marriage, if the jurisdiction passes.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the government is working towards people being able to marry under the law before the end of the year.

Till now, Commonwealth's Marriage Act of Australia defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, which makes same-sex marriage illegal.

This means couples from outside the ACT would be able to get married in the territory, but their relationships may not be recognized in their home state.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he has asked for legal advice on the territory's bill to legalize same sex marriage.
