Australians travelling to Mumbai have been warned of a possible terror attack in the financial capital of India.

According to News.com.au, the Department of Foreign Affairs and trade (DFAT) says it has received information that Mumbai will again be targeted, with upmarket hotels understood to be the most at risk from an attack.

DFAT's Smart Traveller website said that it has been receiving reports that terrorists were planning attacks in India.

It further said that "attacks could occur anywhere at any time with little or no warning, including in locations frequented by Australians."

At least 166 people were killed and 293 injured when ten Pakistani terrorists struck at various locations in Mumbai simultaneously on Nov 26, 2008.

The lone terrorist Ajmal Kasab who was captured alive during the attacks was hanged to death after trial on November 21, 2012.

Australians have also been reminded to exercise a high degree of caution in India due to other threats such as civil unrest, crime and the high rate of vehicle accidents, the report added.
