Oz woman accused of racial rant against Asian schoolboy escapes conviction

The Australian woman who was accused of racially abusing an Asian schoolboy Sydney bus earlier this year has reportedly escaped a conviction although she had pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to News.com.au, Susan Bernobich from Sydney had pleaded guilty to one charge of using offensive language in or near a public place or school and has apologised for her actions outside the court.

The report added that a passenger captured the Bernobich's racial slur on his smartphone in May, causing the police to intervene with a court appearance notice in June without a formal complaint by the victims.

Putting the woman on a six-month good behaviour bond, the magistrate said that he would not record a conviction against Bernobich, and the police facts tendered to the court stated that she is regretful of her words and actions and appeared distressed by the incident's public interest.

However, the passenger, who recorded the video, ridiculed Bernobich's 'lenient' sentence, saying that Bernobich may have apologised so that she could get away with the offence, although adding that it is to be hoped that Bernobich is truthful in her apology and does not cause such an offence again.

The passenger further said that Bernobich should mind her manners in the future, especially now that she is on a good behaviour bond.
