Australia's youngest Test cricket captain, Ian Craig, has passed away at the age of 79, Cricket Australia said.

When he debuted in 1953 at the age of 17 years and 239 days, Craig became the youngest player to play Test cricket for Australia. He then became the youngest Australian Test captain when he took charge of the team at the age of 22 years and 194 days, reported Sport24.

Craig has played 11 Tests between 1953 and 1958, averaging a disappointing 19.88, before retiring at 26.

Recalling his contribution to the sport, Cricket Australia's Chairman Wally Edwards extended sympathies to his family, friends and former teammates in a statement released on Sunday.

Craig is survived by his wife Ross and three children.
