Supreme Court Judge P. Sathasivam will be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) after the retirement of the present incumbent Altamas Kabir.
President Pranab Mukherjee has given his approval to the appointment of Sathasivam as the next Chief Justice.
The 64-year-old Sathasivam joined as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court in January 1996. He was transferred to the Punjab High Court in April 2007, and became a Supreme Court judge on 21st August 2007.

Sathasivam, who will be the 40th CJI, will have tenure till 26th April 2014.

The incumbent Chief Justice who assumed office on September 29 last year, retires on 18th July.
