Former World No. 1 Tiger Woods is fit to start the US PGA on Thursday after he recovered from the back injury that forced the American to withdraw from Sunday's round at Firestone.

38-year-old Woods was a serious doubt for the year's final major but he practised at Valhalla on Wednesday and said that he was pain free. Woods had surgery on a pinched nerve in his back in March and missed the Masters and US Open.

Woods said that he knew it was not the site of the surgery, and added that this is different, The BBC reported.

The 14-time major champion said that the sacrum bone in his back was dislodged when he played his second shot on the second hole on Sunday, but that his physio had popped the bone back in.

Woods said that his physio is here at Valhalla so if his sacrum bone goes out he is able to fix it.

Woods arrived at Valhalla on Wednesday and played the front nine alongside Steve Stricker, Davis Love and Harris English.

Woods said that he still needs to build up strength and it is going to take more time, adding that the treatment has been fantastic. He said that once the bone was put back in the spasms went away and from there he started to get some range of motion.
