Pakistani Attorney General (AG) Muneer A. Malik has decided to quit the office on January 10, just seven months after accepting the constitutional post.
The AG, who has always been regarded as a bridge between the judiciary and the federal government, met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to inform him about his decision, Dawn News reports.
A known Supreme Court lawyer and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Malik spearheaded the lawyers' movement for the independence of the judiciary when Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was deposed by former President General Pervez Musharraf on March 9, 2007.
Malik's resignation has raised speculations about his replacement. If rumours are to be believed, Advocate Akram Sheikh, who is leading a prosecution team to try Musharraf for treason charges, might replace Malik.
