ANI Islamabad

Pakistan has released three senior Taliban prisoners in a bid to start stalled Afghan peace process.

Pakistani government officials and a member of the Taliban confirmed that three Taliban prisoners were released, including Mullah Abdul Ahad Jahangirwal, a former adviser to Taliban leader Mullah Omar; Mullah Abdul Manan, a former Taliban governor in the Afghan province of Helmand; and Mullah Younus, Dawn News reports.

According to the report, the move came less than a week after an Afghan peace delegation visited Pakistan to meet former deputy leader of the Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Pakistan has now released around four dozen Taliban prisoners over the last year in an attempt to help jumpstart peace talks, the report added.

However, there is no sign that the releases have helped peace negotiations in any way.

Some of the prisoners are, in fact, believed to have returned to the fight against the Afghan government.
