Pakistan's YouTube ban might soon be lifted as the Senate's functional committee on Human Rights approved a resolution that seeks to unblock the popular video-sharing website in the country.
Members reportedly expressed their concerns regarding the long-running ban on YouTube in a meeting of the functional committee, headed by its chairman Afrasaid Khattak, and attended by its members and the officials of the ministry of human rights.
According to the Dawn, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman said that the ban posed no advantage as people could still access restricted videos from other websites.
Khattak said that there was no ban on YouTube in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Members of the committee also said that they would raise the issue in the Senate session.
Pakistan has blocked YouTube since September 2012 after the video-sharing website failed to take down the blasphemous 'Innocence of Muslims' movie that sparked furious protests globally and also provoked violent demonstrations across Pakistan, which left more than 20 people dead, the report added.
