Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday in his Independence Day's address pledged to defeat terrorism with the support of the security forces and the people.

"Though the shadows of terrorism are haunting us today but with commitment and resolve we will overcome this scourge," Sharif said at the hoisting of national flag to formally begin celebrations of Pakistan's 67th Independence Day.

He was confident that with the cooperation of Pakistan Army, security agencies and the nation, terrorism will be eliminated and Pakistan will be made hub of peace and security.

The ceremony was attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, envoys of different countries, federal ministers and parliamentarians.

On the occasion, students drawn from different schools enthralled the audience with the national songs.

While referring to the presence of Ban Ki-moon at the Independence Day celebrations, Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan has been an important component of the UN peace keeping missions and the presence of the UN Secretary-General is an acknowledgment of Pakistan's services.

"Pakistan has always stood by the charter of the United Nations and contributed to global peace. On the Independence Day we renew pledge to continue our role in promoting global peace and security, " the prime minister said.

He said Pakistan is faced with multiple challenges but "we, with the cooperation of the people will lay the foundation of a better future, the dream of which was seen by our forefathers."

Sharif said Pakistan has the capability to surprise the world as it did so when nuclear tests were conducted despite all the pressure in 1998 when he was the prime minister.

Highlighting the importance of Pakistan in the comity of nations, the prime minister said the destiny of this region can not be decided without taking on board Pakistan.

"Pakistan is one of the most important powers of South Asia and the development of Gwadar port in Balochistan province and its communication infrastructure will usher in a new era of progress and prosperity in the region. This will make Pakistan the economic and political hub.
