Palestine joins world's chemical weapons watchdog: EU

Palestine, on May 23, submitted its instrument of accession to Chemical Weapons Convention to European Union (EU).

According to Anadolu Agency, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said, "Palestine deposited on 17 May 2018 its instrument of accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the depositary of the Convention".

"The Convention will enter into force for the State of Palestine on 16 June 2018," as per the OPCW.

Since 1997, the OPCW which is recognized as an international chemical weapons watchdog has been functioning as the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Israel, Egypt, South Sudan and North Korea are yet to become members of the organization.
