A Mumbai court today sentenced lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha's murderer to life imprisonment.
The court found Moghul guilty last week of murdering Purkayastha in her apartment in Wadala on August 9, 2012.
Sajjad Ahmad Moghul, 22, the watchman at Pallavi's apartment building, had repeatedly switched off power supply to Pallavi's flat on the fateful day knowing that she would ask for help. When she did, he arrived with an electrician and stole her flat keys. Later, Sajjad sneaked into the flat when Pallavi was sleeping and tried to rape her. When she fought back, he stabbed her repeatedly before slitting her throat.
According to the police, Purkayastha was murdered by Pathan in a premeditated 'act of perversion'.
Pallavi's fiance, Avik Sengupta, who had been living with her, found her body lying in a pool of blood.
Sengupta was a crucial witness and had testified in the case. However, he died of an illness on November 14 last year. Pallavi's Parents had also demanded death penalty for the accused.
