A local court on Wednesday sent Sameer Gaikwad, an accused in Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Govind Pansare's murder case, to seven-day police custody.
Gaikwad was earlier detained by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Sangli region of Kohlapur district in connection with this case.
Pansare's family had earlier sought a SIT probe, alleging that the Maharashtra Police had failed to make any progress in the investigation of the CPI leader's murder.
Pansare and his wife were severely injured after unknown assailants fired on the couple while they were out for their morning walk at Sagarmala area of Kolhapur city. Pansare later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
The attack had elicited strong condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum who demanded a special team to look into the case.
