The US Department of Defence's chief of staff, Rear Admiral Kevin Sweeney on Saturday stepped down from his post.
"After two years in the Pentagon, I've decided the time is right to return to the private sector. It has been an honour to serve again alongside the men and women of the Department of Defence," he said in a statement issued on January 5.
"It has been an honor to serve again alongside the men and women of the Department of Defence," Rear Admiral Sweeney, who had been holding the post since January 2017 added.
He, however, has not cited any reason for the decision.
This comes just a few weeks after Secretary of Defence James Mattis resigned from his post.
