People in Kolkata celebrate "Bengali New Year"

Kolkata revelled in festive spirits as it celebrated the joy of oneness on the occasion of the"Bengali New Year" soaked in cohesive delight, and bid goodbye to the year that is gone.

Bengalis living in Tripura thronged streets of Agartala spreading the message of love, unity and amity on the auspicious occasion.

People of all ages walked down streets of Kolkata, which dazzled with beautiful colours, dancing to the tunes of classic Bengali songs reflecting the rich heritage and cultural ethos.

The organizers of the event said the main aim was to promote unity and brotherhood that was deep rooted in Bengali culture.

 

"We want to promote our secular culture, secular heritage of India. It is the India of Ram and Rahim. It is the India of Sikh and Islam. It is a mixed culture...is our heritage. We want to promote it. In this year our slogan is Ram and Rahim's India. We want to promote our Bengali food, Bengali culture, Bengali heritage, Bengali drinks, Bengali song, Bengali dance, Bengali drama," said Organizer, Emamul Haque.

Meanwhile, Chakma community, an ethnic tribe celebrated Biju festival, a three day long festival that concludes on the day of Bengali New Year, amid food, festivities and hospitality.

Speaking about significance of Biju festival, residents said the event creates a sense of brotherhood among people and bind all castes, creeds and religions.

"It is a festival of celebration, happiness and you know a celebration of fervour, spreads the message of brotherhood, amity and unity," said a resident Syed Sajjad Ali.

Women thronged temples while smearing each other with vermillion and praying for prosperity and health for the family.

Special local dishes and delicacies are prepared in most homes and this churns the aura of the celebrations.

Traditionally, the festival is a day to be spent rejoicing with family and friends. For traders, it is time to close one set of accounts and open another.

Poila Baisakh celebrations are conducted for over a week and a variety of cultural programmes are held to mark the occasion.
