Locals in Lucknow on Sunday offered prayers and took out a candle light vigil for the brave soldiers who lost their lives in terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri town.

People in Lucknow visited mosques to offer namaz.

"Prayers have been held for our security officials who have been killed today. Also, prayers were held so that Allah blesses our security forces with success in the operation. We have gathered here to pray so that terror talks taking place in the country, especially in Kashmir, become unsuccessful," said a resident.

Meanwhile, residents of Uri also expressed grief over the incident.

"As I saw black smoke from a distance, I thought something is going on in general. But when we saw the helicopters flying, we came to know from people living here that tension is going on between the army and militants. Then we realised something might have gone wrong," said a local.

At least 17 soldiers were killed in the gun battle at the base, which is around 100 km from state capital Srinagar. Four militants were also killed after penetrating the base in Uri sector in the most deadly attack in the province in recent years.

Combing operations are currently underway to ensure no untoward element still persists in the Army perimeters.
