Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Monday hit back at back at the BJP-led Centre, saying that people involved in fake encounters have no business to give lectures on nationalism to people.
"As far as nationalism is concerned, many people who are involved in fake encounters have no business to give lectures to people. What happened in the university and the way they are treating the students is the way they treat criminals. Kanhaiya Kumar has done nothing so big and if he has done then they should take action," Sibal told ANI.
"But to call it sedition is not right. I think they (Government) have gone mad," he added.
He also said that the people, who come to the JNU, belong to very poor families from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and have been sent by their families to become something.
"Instead of dealing with university students in the way they should be dealt with, they are being dealt with as criminals," he said.
The Congress leader also hit back at BJP president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that they are in for a lesson if they think they can use state might to quell the urge of the young children to speak their minds.
"If Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi think that days of British Raj are back and they can use state might to quell the urge of our young children to speak their minds, then they are in for a lesson," Sibal said.
Amit Shah earlier today condemned the anti-national protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, saying such activities would not be tolerated in any part of the nation.
"These kinds of anti-national activities will not be tolerated in any part of the country.The Supreme Court had given capital punishment to Afzal Guru despite that slogans were raised in his support," said Shah.
Shah also used the occasion to target Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
"If the Congress wants to support this in the name of freedom of speech then I want to ask them that what more proof they require against anti-nationals," said Shah.
"Do they support the slogans 'har ghar me afzal honge', 'bharat tere tukkde honge'? The Congress must make their stand clear," he added.
