Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the mandate given by the people of the country to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections shows that the democracy has matured and that dynasty cannot be a substitute for governance.

"The Lok Sabha elections results show that Indian democracy has matured. It means that dynasty is not a substitute to governance. People don't want political instability," said Jaitley while speaking on the Motion of Thanks on President Pranab Mukherjee's address in Parliament.

"This verdict is all about the anti-incumbency against one party or the government and is an expression of hope towards another party. We benefitted from both of these points," he added.

"It was after decades that we saw massive crowds in rallies. And, it was not a paid crowd. They came because it was a larger expression of hope, which had gone out of helplessness. The burden on our government will be higher as the people expect them to perform," he said.

He also alleged that the UPA government left the country with low growth rates, high inflation, high fiscal deficits.

"There has been no 'poverty alleviation, but you have alleviated poverty instead'," he said.
