A school principal is a Hometown Heroes in Education award contender after setting up a pet therapy program for kids with behavioural problems, an urban garden and a compulsory chess class for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Sandra Gittens has been a principal for the past 11 years At Public School 102, the New York Daily News reported.
Gittens and her school faculty promote healthy living and try to integrate physical fitness into the whole day - students even do yoga between classes.
Gittens also started a gifted and talented program, which is now in its third year.
