Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's assistant has claimed that the Scot delegated much of the job to him in recent years while remaining the public face of the club.

According to the Mirror, Mike Phelan claimed that he was Manchester United's 'real boss' for the last five years of Ferguson's reign.

Phelan also said that with the way things have gone, his first thoughts are to be a boss because that is what he has been doing for the last five years, albeit with the title of assistant boss.

He further added that Ferguson was the head of the establishment and there was no doubt about it but a lot of people played their part in his success, although they were undercover in that respect.
