American swimming great Michael Phelps has been handed a one-year suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to drunken driving.

The 18-time Olympic gold medallist has also been ordered to serve 18 months of supervised probation, which would mean he has to totally refrain from drinking alcohol, the BBC reported.

Earlier in the year, he was also caught driving at a speed of 84mph in a 45mph zone.

After a 45-day spell at a rehabilitation centre in Arizona, he said that he was looking at a much brighter future than he had in the past, adding that he was able to find out a lot about himself that he never knew.

He was also given a six month ban from swimming following his arrest in September, however, he continued his training.

Phelps declared his retirement after the London Olympics but returned to competition in April.
