Philips has reportedly developed a lighting system that is similar to Apple's iBeacon information system that prompts users about product information and offers when they are inside the Apple Store.

Philips's connected retail lighting system is being tested at a retailer in Dusseldorf, which includes a built-in beacon that can relay location and product information to smartphones.

According to The Verge, the system works alongside a companion app, in which shoppers can see the map of the store they are in and their exact location as determined by the beacon's communication with their phone.

A user can search for a product, while the beacons track their movement and provide directions to the right aisle.

The report said that as for now, Philips is only running a demonstration of the new technology, and it hasn't indicated when the technology would be widely distributed.
