The murder trial of South African Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius has reportedly been compared to former American footballer-turned actor OJ Simpson's trial, which took place nearly twenty years ago.

The trial of the Blade Runner, who is charged with killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has already taken on a 'social-media-meets-reality-TV flavour' with wall-to-wall 24-hour broadcasts of activity from within the court, threatening to turn the case into entertainment for fans of the macabre.

According to Fox News, critics said that Pistorius will become the 'ultimate reality TV star' and branded the upcoming courtroom coverage as 'Keeping up with the Pistoriuses', adding that the trial is Africa's 'OJ Simpson trial'.

The former NFL star was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend and alleged lover Ronald Goldman in 1994, although he was later acquitted.

The report mentioned that similar to Simpson's trial, Pistorius' trial also includes numerous glamorous celebrities and paparazzi, adding that one of the defense attorneys of Simpson recently signed on to provide commentary for a 24-hour TV channel dedicated to Pistorius' trial.

Tweeting, filing, phoning and filming journalists are all descending on South Africa this weekend in readiness for what is dubbed as 'The African Trial of the Century', the report added.
