Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated tennis maestro Leander Paes, who clinched his 15th career Grand Slam and fourth Australian Open title by pairing with Swiss star Martina Hingis in the mixed doubles final in Melbourne.
"Leander Paes continues to make us proud! I congratulate him on the Mixed Doubles win with Martina Hingis at the Australian Open. @Leander," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Paes and Hingis bagged the first grand slam of the year with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over third seed pair of Daniel Nestor of Canada and Kristina Mladenovic of France in one hour and two minutes.
With the win, Hingis has also claimed her 16th Grand Slam title, which includes five singles and 11 doubles titles-nine women's and two mixed.
While Paes and Hingis smashed 19 winners to opponent's 18, the Canadian-French pair committed 16 unforced errors during the match.
