Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth for winning the China Open Super Series title in the women's and men's categories respectively.

The Prime Minister took to twitter to extend his congratulations.

"A wonderful day for Indian badminton! Congrats to @NSaina and K Srikanth for the victories at the China Open Super Series Badminton Tournament," he wrote.

Ace shuttler Nehwal, in match that lasted 43 minutes, beat Japanese qualifier Akane Yamaguchi in straight sets of 21-12 and 22-20 in the China Open to win her third title of the year.

Meanwhile, Srikanth recorded a rare feat by an Indian when he recorded a straight sets win over home favourite and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan to bag the China Open, winning 21-19, 21-17 in what is the biggest win of his career so far.

This is the first time any Indian male shuttler has won a Super Series Premier event ever since the Super Series and Premier tournaments were introduced.
