Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday credited the poor people for implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme and said that his government began working on it from the first day in office.

"I had said that we will work on OROP and work began right from the time we assumed office.

The credit for implementation of OROP goes to the poor of the nation," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing a rally here.

"The previous government had allocated Rs. 500 crore for OROP, but when we looked into the matter further we realised the required amount is Rs. 10,000 crore," he added.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had last week announced OROP for the veterans.

The scheme announced by the government will take 2013 as the base year to calculate pensions and date of implementation will be July1, 2014.

The period for review was five years, something that has been a major sticking point.
