Departing from previously established tradition and practice of paying homage to all leaders at their memorials located on the outskirts of the capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday just paid homage at Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, on the occasion of the nation's 68th Independence Day.

A turbaned Modi placed flowers on the memorial and then bowed deferentially before taking a round and moving on towards the historic Red Fort to deliver his maiden Independence Day speech.

He subsequently reviewed a guard of honour on arrival and unfurled the national tricolor.
