Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sent out Onam greetings to the people of the country.

"Greetings to Malayali friends on Onam. May Onam enhance the spirit of peace, prosperity, brotherhood and truthfulness in our lives," said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also remarked on the significance of Onam as a symbol of national integration, justice, peace and prosperity on the occasion.

"It is wonderful how all sections of Malayali society come together to celebrate Onam, making it a wonderful occasion of national integration. Onam reminds us of the glorious era of King Mahabali and is a day to reaffirm our commitment to create a just, peaceful and prosperous society," PM Modi added.

The agrarian festival Onam, which marks the homecoming of legendary king Mahabali, is being celebrated throughout Kerala. The 10-day long harvest festival is believed to herald prosperity and happiness in the society.

Earlier, President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President M. Hamid Ansari had also greeted the country on the occasion of Onam.

The main centre of the festival is at Thrikakkara temple in Kochi city which is believed to be the ancient capital of King Mahabali.

The festival celebrations begin every year with 'Aathachamayam', the royal parade on 'aatham' day in Thripunithara.

Village artists from Kerala also perform a traditional bear dance with colourful costumes. Locals also throng the temples across the state.
