Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina to convey his congratulations and best wishes after the Lower House of the Indian Parliament-the Lok Sabha -- passed the Indo-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement Bill, and termed it as a historic milestone in relations between the two countries.
The Prime Minister shared his thoughts via a series of tweets.
"Today a historic milestone has been reached in India-Bangladesh relations after the passing of the Constitutional Amendment by Parliament," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
"The Amendment passed ensures a permanent settlement of land boundary with Bangladesh and resolution of long-pending boundary issues," he added.
"This would contribute to a stable andpeaceful boundary, better management and coordination of the border andwill lead to enhanced security as well," the Prime Minister said.
"My thanks to all the political parties for their cooperation, as also to the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal," he added.
"This reflects the collective will of the nation to build constructive relations with our neighbours," the Prime Minister tweeted.
"Spoke to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and conveyed my greetings to the people of Bangladesh on this landmark occasion," he added.
The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Constitution 119th Amendment Bill on the land boundary agreement between India and Bangladesh.
The Bill was unanimously passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with 180 votes in favour and zero against it.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was cleared which includes territories in Assam along with those in West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya.
The LBA aims at the acquiring of territories by India and the transfer of territories to Bangladesh through retaining of adverse possession in pursuance of the 1974 agreement between the two nations. Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya all fall under the bill.
