PM Modi introduces new welfare schemes for pregnant women, senior citizens

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday introduced several welfare measures for pregnant women and senior citizens.

In his 43-minute address, he said, "For pregnant women, a new scheme is being started. Rs. 6,000 will be credited into the accounts of pregnant women for registration, delivery, vaccination, nutrition. This will help to reduce maternal mortality and improve nutrition deficiency in a big way."

He, however, said that the government, in a pilot project, is already disbursing Rs. 4000 in pregnant women's accounts in 53 districts.

In a major relief to senior citizens having fixed deposit accounts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "There are many senior citizens in India. We are starting a scheme for them. For senior citizens -- on up to 7.5 lakh Rs deposit with yearly 8 percent interest will be there for 10 years.
