PM Modi leaves for Canberra, to address joint session of Australian Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Canberra this evening, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbot and address a joint session of the Australian Parliament on Tuesday.

Reaching out to the Indian Diaspora at the Allphones Arena in Sydney earlier this afternoon, Prime Minister Modi said that it was his good fortune to be the first Indian prime minister to be born post-Independence.

"It is my good fortune that I'm the first prime minister of India to be born post-1947," Prime Minister Modi said.

"We did not get the opportunity to die for the nation or spend our youth in jail. But we can surely live for the nation," he said.

 

At the gathering, which was attended by over 16,000 members of the Indian Australian community, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the respect and ovation that he was getting in Australia to the Indian people.

"This welcome, this respect, this enthusiasm...I dedicate it to the people of India," he said.

Prime Minister Modi pitched for a clean and developed India and invited Australian-Indians to build toilets at their place of originin India.

He also pointed out that the 'Jan Dhan Yojana' launched by his government was a commitment to integrate the poor in India's development journey.

The Prime Minister also pitched 'Make in India' as an initiative to create jobs for the youth who can then contribute to the world.

Prime Minister Modi further said that his government had opted for 100 percent FDI in railways in India which gave a huge market and window for improvement.

The Prime Minister also praised the power of youth and emphasized on the importance of skill development.
