The Congress Party on Sunday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late response on the cow vigilantes and said several innocent lives must have been saved had he not maintained his deliberate silence on this issue.
"Better late than never, that is what Prime Minister has done. But if he would have done this two years ago or would have done this when the cow vigilantes were assaulting and killing the people across the nation, then some lives might have got saved. The statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave on anti-social people needs to be investigated." said Congress leader Meem Afzal.
Echoing similar views, Congress leader PC Chacko said, "Prime Minister's speech is too late and too little. In the last three months, Prime Minister was keeping deliberate silence on this issue."
He further said that people were killed in the BJP-ruled states by 'gau rakshaks' and now Prime Minister is realizing that these 'gau rakshaks' are anti-social elements.
Breaking his silence on cow vigilantes in the country, Prime Minister Modi yesterday said most of them were anti-social elements masquerading as gau rakshaks (cow protectors).
"It makes me angry that people are running shops in the name of cow protection. Some people indulge in anti-social activities at night and in the day masquerade as cow protectors," he said while speaking at his first townhall-style address to mark the second anniversary of his government's MyGov initiative.
The Prime Minister's comments come at a time when questions are being raised on his silence amid the spate of attacks, particularly in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, on Dalits, allegedly in the name of cow protection.
