Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday recalled the contributions of Australian lawyer John Lang, who had been the counsel for Rani Lakshmibai in her battles against the East India Company.

Taking to twitter, Prime Minister Modi referred to Lang as 'multifaceted', posting an article and the photo collage of the great personality that he gifted to his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott.

"Heard of John Lang? Know more about this multifaceted Australian who became the Counsel to Rani Lakshmibai," he wrote.

"John Lang- a remarkable Australian's extraordinary Indian journey," he added.

John Lang was the first novelist to be born in Australia. After receiving his law degree from Cambridge, Lang set up his office in India and even started a newspaper 'The Moffusilite' from Meerut.

Among his law clients was the Jhansi ruler Rani Lakshmibai in her lawsuits against the British East India Company.

Lang died in 1864 and is buried in Mussoorie.
