Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the nation on Sunday for eradication of diseases like polio, but reminded the people that more needed to be done to reduce the mortality rate of mothers and infants.
"Scientists from various countries have gathered in New Delhi to discuss about healthcare facilities in India. They are developing a strategy to bring down the high mortality rate of mothers and infants. The strategy has been named 'Call to Action'," said Prime Minister Modi.
He spoke about how 50,000 mothers and nearly 13 lakh infants die annually during delivery, or soon after delivery.
