The president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Sidharth Birla, today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden Independence Day address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort was the best speech he has heard till date.

"I think it was the best speech I ever heard in my working life. It was just amazing. I have never heard such speech in my lifetime. We should have seen the audience, he was almost addressing the whole world," said Birla.

"It's not possible to cover all topics at once, and especially when it is an extempore. He called himself a 'pradhan sevak'. He also said that the BJP won't work in majority, but will work along with every political party," he said.

"He gave importance to job creation and he tried to bring attention to all topics such as cleanliness, women security," he added.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister unfurled the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort after inspecting a guard of honour.

During his address, he touched upon issues related to poverty, women safety, female foeticide, the importance of the IT sector, the discontinuation of the planning commission, ways to improve India's tourism, investment potential cleanliness, making India the global manufacturing hub of the future and the problem of farmer suicides and how best to resolve it.
