Bids for the ongoing auction for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monogrammed pinstriped suit on Friday crossed Rs. two crore, with a Surat-based businessman leading the race for possession of the outfit.

"A resident of Surat has bid Rs 2,00,92,000 via telephone. He has been participating in the auction since yesterday afternoon and he started his bids from Rs 1,49,00 ,000," an official at the venue told the media.

The businessman in question, Mukesh Patel, is reportedly a diamond merchant.

Prime Minister Modi had worn the suit in question while attending the Republic Day Parade.

Proceeds from the sale of the suit, a 'private' gift from NRI businessman Rameshkumar Bhikabhai Virani, will be used as part of the 'Namaami Gange' projects.
