Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged the opposition to help create a land acquisition bill that works for the benefit of the farmers, inviting his critics to 'work together' on the ordinance.
"The land reforms I want to introduce are necessary, because for the past 120 years, farmers have lived with a law that has denied them their rights. You [the Congress] have allowed this," the Prime Minister said in reply to the Motion of Thanks to President Pranab Mukherjee's address in the Lok Sabha.
"If despite all the benefits that the new reforms will bring, you feel there is any provision that is anti-farmer, I am willing to make changes to the proposal. Let us work together," he added.
Earlier this week, the opposition staged a walk out from the Parliament after the government introduced the Land Acquisition bill in the House.
Social activist Anna Hazare too has been protesting against the ordinance, and wants the Government to take back the Land Ordinance bill and look out for ways to improve the condition of farmers. Hazare had earlier lashed out at the BJP-led government for removing provisions which provided for taking the farmers' consent before acquiring their land.
