Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid a visit to the Gandantegchinlen Monastery here in the Mongolian capital.
Prime Minister Modi interacted with the Hamba Lama or the chief abbot of the monastery and gifted him a Bodhi tree sapling.
The Prime Minister also did a parikrama of the Janraisag monastery, which houses a 26 metre high statue of the Janraisag Buddha.
The Tibetan-style Buddhist monastery, built in the mid 19th century, currently has over 150 monks in residence. The Tibetan name reportedly translates to the 'Great Place of Complete Joy'.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address the Mongolian Parliament, the first foreign leader to address the members on Sunday, a holiday. He will later call on Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, before laying the foundation stone of the IT centre at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology.
Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Ulaanbaatar on Saturday night, is the first Indian prime minister to visit Mongolia.
