The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh as 'historic', saying the latter's neighbourhood first and Look East Policy are reaching fructification.

Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP spokesperson and Member of Parliament from New Delhi, said the future has to be bright irrespective of whatever the pasts may be.

"And keeping future of both countries, this particular agreement is very very relevant…There are going to be various other agreements which are relatable to the exchange of information and criminal activities across the border, extradition treaty and of course Bangladesh is one of our largest exporting partner where we are exporting products," said Lekhi.

"So, under those circumstances the pleasantries and Mr. Modi's vision that neighbourhood first and Look East Policy, I think both are coming to fructification and it's going to be really excellent which is going to affect both internal security and trade between the countries. And I think we are fortunate to live through this historical moment," she added.

Prime Minister Modi is presently on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.

In a departure from protocol, he was received at the airport in Dhaka by Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
