Police have arrested a Maoist in Jharkhand's Latehar Ddistrict.

The Maoist has been identified as Mukesh Kumar Yadav, and he was the area commander of the rebel People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI).

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rosan Gudiya described it as a big achievement for the police, as Yadav was booked under multiple cases of dacoity, killings and kidnappings.

"He is booked in as many as twelve cases in Latehar and Palamu Districts," he said.

Police also seized a home made country pistol and two revolvers from Yadav.

Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s.

The rebel group, which claims to be fighting for the rights of the poor and landless, controls some of India's mineral-rich areas and operate in large swathes of the eastern, central and southern countryside.

Jharkhand forms part of a belt running down eastern India that is prone to attacks by rebels who target politicians and businesses they believe are colluding to ruin the livelihoods of native tribal groups.

The rebels are estimated to number 7000 hardcore fighters in nearly a third of India's 630 districts.
