Police arrested a top ranking militant from a village in West Bengal in the wee hours of Sunday, a senior officer said.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Satyajit Banerjee, said police arrested Malkhan Singh alias Madhav Mondal, leader of underground Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), from a forest area and recovered arms and ammunition from his possession.
"We were able to spot him in Jamalpur forest at 2 O'clock in the night and he was arrested. We recovered a rifle and 112 bullets of this rifle from his possession," he said in Malda town.
After receiving the intelligence input, a police team rushed to the spot, cordoned off the village and took him into custody.
One automatic rifle, ammunition and cash were seized from the militant.
"We recovered 46,000 Indian currency notes and 85,000 currency notes, which we think is fake currency, from him. There are nine non bailable warrants pending against him," Banerjee added.
The KLO was set up in 1995 with the objective of carving out a separate Kamtapur state comprising six districts of West Bengal and four districts of neighbouring Assam state.
