Police are cracking down on Uber after complaints from old-school taxi firms that the company's lower fares are hurting the big cab companies.

Uber has hit back with a police harassment complaint at Independent Police Complaints Authority, reported Stuff.co.nz.

Uber is gaining a big chunk of the market share in Auckland and Wellington that has taken the world by storm.

Police have charged many Uber drivers with infringement notices for using their smartphone app as a meter.
