Coming only a few days after a village headman was shot, militants killed a Special Police Officer (SPO) here on Sunday.
According to Muddasir Ahmed, an eyewitness of the incident, a local police official was asked to come outside his residence at Kanchakan village (Sopore) by two men. He was then, reportedly, chased around the locality before being shot in the chest.
"When the official was about to take a bath in the morning, two men called him outside his house and after a while we saw that the two men were chasing him. We then saw them shoot on his legs to stop him and after that they shot him in the chest," said Mohammad Shafdir, a local.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. this morning, and resulted in death on the spot. The police have reportedly registered a case and have started investigations to trace down the perpetrators.
On Friday, a village headman was critically injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at him on the outskirts of Sopore.
The victim of Friday's incident, 30-year-old Khazir Mohammad, was attacked while he was coming out of a local mosque after offering prayers in his Kranki Shivan village which is 55 kilometers from Srinagar.
