Leaders of various political parties on Sunday condemned the beheading of British aid worker David Haines in Iraq by the Islamic State, calling it destructive and a threat to civilization.

"The execution shows the sick mentality of the IS and it shows that their basic nature is destructive. Such incidents should be condemned and the United Nations, which was formed for interfering in such exigencies, should also step in to ensure that persons that are suffering should get adequate support and that normalcy should return to the region and such incidents should not occur again," Samajwadi Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told ANI here.

Congress leader Manish Tewari on his part said the ISIS has emerged as the single most pernicious threat to civilization not only in the Middle East but all across the world.

"All democratic countries need to come together in order to ensure that the head of this snake is cut-off. Unfortunately, there seems to be a dichotomy, there seems to be a contradiction and approach which is allowing the ISIS to continue with its activity and expand with its sphere of influence," he added.

The Islamic State (IS) militants released a third video on Saturday, purportedly showing the execution of British aid worker David Haines.

Haines, an aid worker from Perth, was taken hostage in the village of Atmeh, in Syria, in March 2013. The 44-year-old had been helping French agency ACTED deliver humanitarian aid.

His execution comes hours after his family had made a direct appeal to IS to contact them on Friday.

IS, which also known as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), had released a video on September 2 showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff, who was kidnapped in Syria in August 2013. Another American journalist, James Foley, was executed and a video was released on August 19.
