Political leaders paid tribute to freedom fighter and noted educationist Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the Central Hall of Parliament here on Tuesday on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani and Union Ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu and Najma Heptullah, and Ministers of State Babul Supriyo, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were among those who offered floral tribute to the former education minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the freedom fighter on Twitter.
"Scholar, freedom fighter and a man who devoted his life towards nation building, I salute Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a scholar and senior leader of the Indian independence movement who became the country's first education minister.
He was one of the tallest national leaders of his time and promoted the cause of Hindu Muslim unity as well as secularism and socialism.
His contribution to laying the foundation of education in independent India is recognised by celebrating his birthday as "National Education Day" across India.
