Two days after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) recorded a historic win in Tamil Nadu assembly polls, party chief J. Jayalalithaa met state Governor K Rosaiah on Saturday where she staked the claim to form the government.

Newly elected members of the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu yesterday elected Jayalalithaa as the leader of the AIADMK legislative party.

Fighting heavy odds, the 68-year-old AIADMK supremo proved her critics wrong again as her party has been steered to power for a second consecutive term.

This is for the first time since the death of former chief minister M G Ramachandra Menon, who is popularly known as MGR, in 1987 that a party will return to power for a consecutive second term in Tamil Nadu.

Jayalalithaa's charisma won her a second term, though her arch rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) managed to win more than 70 seats.

The AIADMK won 134 seats whereas the M Karunanidhi led party has won 89 seats in the assembly polls contested for 232 seats.
