The family of 41-year-old Indian mother, Prabha Arun Kumar, who was stabbed and killed in Sydney last week, have reportedly said that they "don't know what to make of" the incident.

Kumar's brother Shivaprasad Shetty said that his sister had never expressed any apprehensions regarding racism. He noted that if the motive of the attack was to steal, then she was not robbed and added that the attack was "puzzling," reported The Daily Telegraph.

Shetty said that the family had no option but to wait for the Australian to shed some light on the incident.

He said that his parents broke down every now and then and that it was a difficult time for the family.

Kumar moved to Sydney three years ago to work on an IT project and was planning to return home to her family in April, her family said. Her husband, Arun, flew to Sydney on Monday to identify his wife's body and has been too distraught to speak publicly.

The couple's daughter Meghana remains in India with her relatives and has not been told about the incident.

Kumar was talking to her husband on her mobile phone as she walked home to Westmead from Parramatta railway station on Saturday night.

Her husband, who lives in India with their daughter, heard his wife come face-to-face with her attacker before being stabbed in the neck.

She was found on a footpath in Parramatta Park , about 300m from her home, and later died in hospital.
