Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court for safeguarding the nation's crucial 'fourth pillar of democracy', the media, by rejecting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's circular to prevent the media from publishing 'defamatory news' against the city government.
"The court has shown [Arvind Kejriwal's] real face. This is what he really deserved. It is a sign of victory of democracy, because, the media is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy," Tiwari told ANI.
Earlier in the day, the apex court stayed Kejriwal's circular against the media over the publication of 'defamatory' news against the Delhi government. The court also questioned Kejriwal's stand on the issue and gave him six weeks to respond.
This was in response to Kejriwal urging officials working with the Delhi Government to lodge complaints against 'defamatory' news items which 'damage the reputation' of the government with the Principal Secretary of the home department.
