President expresses sorrow over Arunachal student's death

President Pranab Mukherjee has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the sad demise of Nido Taniam, student from Arunachal Pradesh.

He condemned the violence which preceded Nido Taniam's demise and called upon law enforcement agencies to make every effort to bring the guilty to justice and ensure the safety and security of all who live in the capital city.

In a statement, the President said New Delhi is home to people from all parts of the country and the core principle of unity in diversity must always be respected.

He further called upon all citizens to work hard to strengthen bonds of friendship and amity amongst the diverse communities that constitute our nation.

 

Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, had reportedly gone to Lajpat Nagar on January 29 in search of an address, and was allegedly mocked by someone at a shop for the style his hair.

In a fit of rage, Nido broke a glass at the shop but he paid money for that. Afterwards he was allegedly beaten with sticks.

The next day, when he didn't wake up, his friends rushed him to AIIMS, where he was declared dead.
