President Pranab Mukherjee, in a message on the eve of the International Day of Older Persons (October 1, 2015), has called upon people to renew their commitment to the welfare of elders and ensure for them a healthy, dignified and productive life.

Writing to HelpAge India, the President has said "I am happy to learn that the "International Day of Older Persons" is being celebrated on October 1st, 2015 by HelpAge India.

The elderly constitute a growing proportion of our population owing to improved health care and declining mortality rates. Society as a whole should take care of the elderly especially those who are economically and socially disadvantaged. It is our moral and social responsibility to not only protect and care for them but also cherish their valuable guidance and contribution.

During the span of thirty-seven years, HelpAge India has been rendering valuable service to the cause of the disadvantaged and needy older people.

On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, let us renew our commitment to the welfare of elders and ensure for them a healthy, dignified and productive life".
